Growth, Artists, Global Teamhood

Hello, friends of Market Monkeys!

We have been making a lot of changes, and we are so pleased to share updates with you. We’ve expanded our roster, our team, and every day Market Monkeys is looking more and more like the company envisioned 14 years ago when we launched.

Over the past few months, our artists have put out beautiful new music, toured with heroes, and hit exciting career milestones. It’s an honor to work alongside them as they create art and navigate the journey. There are plenty of fall tours on the go, so please go out and see them LIVE in a city near you! And update your profile to ensure you continue to get the latest monkey business!

Over the summer, Rose Cousins made several special appearances in support of her GRAMMY and JUNO nominated album Natural Conclusion. She played multiple festivals, opened shows for a musical hero Patty Griffin; appeared for Canada Day celebrations in the nation’s capital; and at the SOCAN Awards where she also took home the Folk/Roots Music Award! This fall has included tour dates in New Brunswick, Alberta, Massachusetts, Connecticut. And she is touring in England in October and November!

Newfoundland’s Catherine Allan and Andrew O’Brien have had an incredible year. They released their sophomore album HOLD FAST on Old Farm Pony Records in May, with the title track reaching #1 on the CBC Music Top 20! They also toured all spring with Alan Doyle. Last week, they took home Video of the Year, Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year at the MusicNL Awards. They are currently mid-stride of their cross-Canada album release tour – with special guests Jim Bryson, Mo Kenney and Joey Landreth opening select shows. Not to be missed – catch them live!

Della Mae hit the festival circuit hard this summer, bringing along some very special guests including Alison Brown, Bonnie Paine (Elephant Revival) and Avril Smith. One stop was RockyGrass in Lyons, CO — check out this live performance! This week, their Ear Trumpet microphone and other artifacts of their global travels have been put on display at the Bluegrass Hall of Fame Museum. They are working on an EP of fan favorite songs from recent touring for release in early 2019, and they’re gearing up to record a new album. They are on the road this fall – catch a show!

John Smith announced his new album, Hummingbird at Cambridge Folk Festival, performing the first single Willy Moore in anticipation of the October 5th UK release (available worldwide in early 2019!). Watch The Story of Hummingbird, shot by local UK filmmaker Simon Whitehead. The Guardian recently praised the record, saying it is “delivered softly and gorgeously to warm you this winter.” John drew additional accolades from Folk RadioThank Folk For That, and Music News. He just completed a very successful first leg of his release tour in Ireland, and has extensive European tour dates lined up to celebrate the new album featuring special guests.

Fans of the TV show Nashville are no stranger to Sarah Siskind’s songwriting — she contributed 21 songs to the show!  Watch the cast perform the series’ signature song “A Life That’s Good” in the finale, written by Sarah and Ashley Monroe. She’s just returned from an inspiring experience participating in the Songwriters program at IBMA. Now, Sarah is focused on making a new record in the new year. And we are pleased to share “Out in the Open” – the title track of Steep Canyon Rangers’ latest album (written by Sarah with Graham Sharpe and Michael Guggino) – for your consideration in the first round of GRAMMY pre-nominations for Best American Roots Song.

Kirby Brown released his sophomore album Uncommon Prayer on Sept 7th! Leading up to this much anticipated release, Kirby received high praise and premiered videos with Wide Open Country and American SongwriterRolling Stone named Kirby one of 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know, praising the album as “a thoughtful, clever collection that rocks and swoons in equal measure”, one that sounds like “a catechism in song of everyday hurt and hope.” Catch Kirby in Brooklyn October 29th with Nikki Lane and Johnathan Tyler!

In August, Jim Lauderdale released TWO albums: Time Flies and Jim Lauderdale & Roland White. Time Flies has spent 15 consecutive weeks on the AMA/CDX Top 50 Americana chart, with over fifty Americana and AAA radio stations currently playing tracks from the album. Check out what Rolling Stone had to say about these new releases. Jim is in the midst of an epic fall tour, but to tide you over until he comes to a city near you, enjoy this video for Wild on Me Fast

Dervish is currently embarking on their fall tour across the UK and select cities in Europe. And in March they’re headed to the US to bring some authenticity to St Patrick’s Day celebrations from the Northeast to the Midwest to the South! The band is gearing up to release a new album – stay tuned for more updates coming soon!
